Runic AlphabetsReading the signs of Britannia & Serpent Isle

Signs, plaques, and books in Ultima VII are written in Britannian runes, Serpent Isle's ancient ruins use the snake-like Ophidian script, and the gargoyles have a script of their own. Here are all three, with a translator that writes any word in each.

Ophidian Script

Serpent Isle only. It's the writing of the lost Ophidian civilization, found on signs, plaques, and books in the old ruins.

You'll need it for puzzles such as the rune pedestals at the gate of Skullcrusher. In the game, the Lens of Translation or the Translation spell can read it for you.

Gargish

The script of the gargoyles, first seen in Ultima VI. It has 30 letters, one for each sound, so it spells words the way they're pronounced.

The letters are laid out by sound. Each row is a family of related sounds (lips, tongue tip, and so on), and the columns follow a pattern: a dot above means a hard stop (p, t, k), a wavy top means the voiced version (b, d, g), and an open top marks the nasal and vowel sounds.

Sources

The runic and Ophidian alphabets come from page 8 of Origin's Serpent Isle manual ("Runic, Ophidian and Druidic"), cross-checked against the older chart reproduced by Bootstrike.com. We redrew the Britannian runes as simple strokes and traced the Ophidian letters from the manual as vector shapes. The Gargish alphabet was created by Herman Miller for Origin's Ultima VI. We redrew it from the letter charts on Martin Brenner's Gargish pages, with the letter order from Origin's Gargish documentation. All three alphabets are © Origin Systems / Electronic Arts.
